Tardy students

Student life can be so hectic at times. Assignments, examinations, in-class activities, as well as homework; these are all features of a student’s life. But in today’s context, the most important thing for students is to be in class on time. Tardiness is among the biggest concerns of the education sector in Fiji. If a student is late, he or she misses out on what is being taught in class.  Now teachers are taking matters in their own hands, by dismissing students from class if they are late.

Teachers have the right to keep students out of class if they arrive late to school. This is according to the Ministry of Education after Fijivillage raised the issue that some students who arrive even 5 minutes late to school, are given detention or told to stay outside the classroom by teachers which leads to them missing out on the lessons taught.

Students often give their reasons for coming late, as ‘I missed my bus’ or ‘travelling from far’. Some of them are genuine, while others have in fact been goofing around town, and deliberately reaching school late. I was sometimes late to high school because I travelled from Baulevu, in the interior of Nausori, to a reputable school in Suva. It was extremely embarrassing, especially when all the students would look up when the teacher (whoever would be taking the morning class) would look at my late arrival form, and say (sarcastically) “Oh this is why you are late today? How about you make an arrangement with the school to provide you boarding so that you are at least in time for classes?”.

Most of the teachers would not want to understand why the student is late, but would focus on the statement, that the student is late, and has missed a very important piece of my class, and therefore will have to be in detention. Many would quietly endure doing the classroom duties in the afternoon, but there is always that burden, that humiliation the student feels when the teacher tries to pin him/ her down for coming late and making a scene in front of everyone.
Yet, there are those students who are deliberate truants. They simply do it for the ‘fun’ of it. Going to billiard shops, net- cafes, or the movies. In that case, when students are late, they do deserve to be told off by teachers, and given punishment. But when it comes to genuine cases, teachers mark the students and note their names in the ‘black book’.

Tardiness is not something one promotes, but punishment depends on the situation. Occasional tardiness does call for some sort of punishment, because there comes a time when students truly do need to get their priorities right. After all, a school is an institution of order and discipline and students need to be abide by its rules. But it is not right for teachers to hand out punishment which requires them to do manual labour such as cutting the grass in school, or cleaning up when the duties were to be done by someone else. Rather, they should be handing out tasks that relate to academia, and would help students improve, in their classes, and make them willing to attend classes. If a teacher is indeed concerned about the student, he or she would be willing to understand the student’s situations and help with the problem of tardiness.

  1. Right on! That's what I'm going to do the next time a student walks in late. Yeah, right. A well-written, well-argued blog entry with relevant links and a block quote.

  2. Wow I can relate to this on so many levels!

I was once 10 minutes late to class in high school and taken to the principals office and lectured for half a day missing all classes! (not that I am complaining).

The shocking thing was these people (high school teachers) are supposed to be the ones guiding young minds to one day be the future of the country.

Thank god USP lecturers, unlike High school teachers, have actual education and refrain from such senseless acts (gulp).

To be fair though, if lecturers are not at least a little bit strict students will take advantage and come late to class regularly. I guess the challenge is differentiating between the fakers and the genuine cases.

  3. Good blog. vinaka. I say on this issue is that students has the right to education because they paid the school fees to get educated and not to be cleaning the school compound. Cleaning the school compound is the job of the school cleaner. Some teachers are so bad that they won’t let the student in the classroom if they are five minutes late. If i were the teacher i ask he /she are you the head of school to pick me out of the classroom. Teachers should know that some students in-deed travel form far and the old bused we have in Fiji doesn’t help either. The teachers have good AC cars which they can drive as fast as they can but students have to rely on the bus drivers. Teachers close that mouth and do your job

  4. When i was a senior in high school, one of my best friends lived in Nadi and our school was in Lautoka and she had to travel everyday from one town to another city everyday. there was of course a school bus that took students who had to commute far. Our principal understood the situation of many of these students.

However, our form teacher was always dissing her and some of the others that came late. She aws obsessed about her form being the best form or something. After some time she went to the extent of fining students for being late to class. The money obtained from all these late comers were to be used to buy mops and brooms for our classroom and other stuff which i thought was pretty unreasonable especially when we were just students. today i live right next to a school here in Suva, a primary school, in fact. This primary school sends kids home when they are late. I think it is a stupid law to tell students to go back home when they have at least reached school, even if they are just 30minutes late. it may have been due to traffic, or that they simply missed the first bus. I mean come on, its silly to just send them back home, making them miss one day of studying.

  5. Wow!!! I have to admit that this aspect of student life has never been talked about. Well!! thanks for actually bringing this issue up. I support your argument in the sense that we all have gone through student life and we all have gone through the humiliation of coming late to school. We have our reasons whether genuine or made up but we don't deserve to be humiliated in front of our colleagues. I mean that is just embarrassment. I remember my school days when I came late to school. I would be standing in front of the door, and apparently my so not favorite teacher would be giving me her frowning looks. Like I have committed a major crime and I deserve to be put on detention without asking me the reason for coming late. You know, its the teachers who need to change their attitude and look at students as their friends not enemies.
